FINDING FAITH

As you have read through this website, or the Good News newspaper, you might now be curious about the Christian faith: what is it all about, is it true, and is it for you?

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

Christianity is about getting to know God personally so that we can enjoy life with him in the here and now - and eternally in the next life. Developing a relationship with God is what we were created for. Christianity is also about receiving from God the strength to overcome our selfish desires, which sets us free to love others more, and so live a life of service to God and others. It also about receiving God's forgiveness for all the wrong we have done, that separates us from him in this life and will separate us from him for ever if we continue to live life our own way.

Isn't every religion about that? Well, no, because no one except Jesus Christ is able to offer the way to an individual, personal relationship with God, and no one else can offer God's forgiveness. Is that an arrogant claim of Christians? No, it's the unique claim of the Bible and of Jesus himself. He said, 'I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except by me.' Either he was wrong or he was right.

Millions of Christians around the world and through 2,000 years have found that he was right. The Bible says there is one intermediary between us and God - Jesus. You don't need a priest or a prophet or a guru to get you to God - you simply need to turn away from your old life, ask God to forgive you, and believe that Jesus died for you. Then you can receive God's Holy Spirit into your life, and be empowered to follow Jesus' example.

We still makes mistakes - we don't suddenly become perfect - but our lives begin to head in the right direction, towards the God who made us and loves us so much that he was prepared to die a cruel death for us.

IS IT TRUE?

The Christian faith is not some philosophy, dreamt up to make people feel better, or to be a crutch in times of need. The Christian faith is based on a person, a very real person - the best-known human being in the history of the planet – Jesus Christ. His life is a fact of history, and our time itself is measured from his birth.

But Jesus was more than just a man. He was God too. In Jesus, God became a human being, lived a perfect life, and died on a cross - taking God's punishment for all your sins and mine. But he came back to life, proving his power over death and the fact that he was God. Then he went back to heaven and will one day return again.

In Jesus, we are offered a person to follow, a power to transform lives, a purpose for living and the promise of eternal life.

Why not read about other people's experiences of Jesus in their life? For example, 'Extreme Faith: Walking the Talk', a free e-book you can download, contains the personal life stories of a variety of Christians, including Good News Editor Andrew Halloway, plus Sue Davies, Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, Eric Delve, Bruce Marchiano, Roger Forster, Chris Lavers, Keith Tondeur, David Oliver, Julia Loren, Baroness Cox, Stephen Strader, Peter Gammons and Ian McCormack.
